Season 1 of Passages (Episode 1 to 11)
At the heart of the 2024 scientific expedition aboard the CCGS Amundsen
It is almost time to head out to sea aboard Canada’s research icebreaker, the CCGS Amundsen, for its 2024 scientific expedition.
Before leaving its home port for four months, the Amundsen enters a period of scientific mobilization. For two weeks, the Amundsen Science team works closely with the Canadian Coast Guard to install several tonnes of instruments and equipment on board for scientific operations planned in Arctic and subarctic waters.
Guests: Luc Michaud, Anissa Merzouk and Amélie Desmarais
Three full days to test, calibrate, and repair all scientific instruments and equipment aboard the CCGS Amundsen before departing on its four-month Arctic expedition. Here is what the Amundsen Science team does during these trial days in the Saguenay Fjord.
Guests: Myriam Thériault, Alexandre Forest and Fatma Dhifallah
In this third episode of Passages, we meet researchers working with Inuit communities, studying cold-water corals and sponges, and investigating bacteria involved in oil spills in the Labrador Sea aboard the CCGS Amundsen. Discover how their work addresses Inuit community questions and their experience on board during the Amundsen 2024 expedition.
Guests: Barbara Neves, Rodd Laing and Francesco Bisiach
Sediments collected from the seafloor can help us uncover the secrets of the Canadian Arctic’s past. In this fourth episode, we bring together three scientists from Université Laval, Dalhousie University, and Natural Resources Canada to learn more about why and how sediments are collected and analyzed aboard the CCGS Amundsen.
Guests: Laura Broom, Hilary Corlett and Émilie Saulnier-Talbot
While transiting through Nares Strait, the Amundsen visited several fjords on both the Canadian and Greenlandic sides. During these stops, scientists collected a wide range of data and samples to better characterize fjord waters and surrounding glaciers.
Here, six scientists describe and discuss these operations.
Guests: Claire Waelbroeck, Catherine Jeandel and Florence Mercier
On August 22, 2024, scientists and crew aboard the CCGS Amundsen reached the 83rd parallel in the Arctic Ocean to conduct scientific operations. Three scientists then came together to discuss this unique moment and the research opportunities related to marine organisms found in the Arctic.
A contaminant is a compound present in an environment at a concentration higher than its natural background level. When it has a negative effect on the biology of that environment, the contaminant becomes a pollutant. This episode brings together three scientists studying the presence of contaminants in Arctic waters. They were aboard the Amundsen to collect water and sea ice samples, which will later be analyzed in their respective laboratories.
Each year, the research icebreaker welcomes many early-career scientists and offers a unique space for learning and experimentation for everyone. In this eighth episode, Passages welcomed three students to discuss the various student research opportunities aboard the Amundsen and in the Arctic.
Guests: Lucie Bourreau, Antoine Villefer and Corentin Gouzien
Starting with icebreaker questions, Amélie from Amundsen Science discusses sea ice with three specialists aboard the CCGS Amundsen during the fourth leg of the 2024 expedition. Discover how sea ice forms and how it interacts with wind and waves in this episode of Passages.
Vanessa and Julia were invited to speak with Eugénie, the host of this episode, about their respective polar science research projects at Dalhousie University. Learn more about sharks, water sampling, proteins, vitamins, and primary production in this tenth episode of the Passages podcast.
Guests: Vanessa Schiliro and Julia Cantelo
Research conducted aboard the CCGS Amundsen requires communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing with members of northern Indigenous communities. In this episode, researchers, a northern research officer, and the Commanding Officer of the CCGS Amundsen discuss ways to better include communities in research projects and daily ship activities.
Guests: Myrah Graham, Philippe Archambault, Gérard Duhaime and Commanding Officer Pellerin
