In a new article published by NASA Science, Simon Bélanger, an ocean colour remote sensing specialist at the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), shares his experience aboard the CCGS Amundsen during the CASCADES expedition.
From August 6 to September 3, 2026, the expedition covered more than 3,000 nautical miles along Greenland’s coast, reaching the Robeson Channel. Scientists from several disciplines worked across Greenland’s fjords and coastal waters to better understand the interactions between glaciers, meltwater and the ocean.
Bélanger’s research focused on ocean colour and phytoplankton, with measurements collected aboard the Amundsen helping validate observations from NASA’s PACE satellite. These observations contribute to a better understanding of how carbon and nutrients move through Arctic marine ecosystems and how these processes may be affected by glacier melt.
