Amundsen Science & Amundsen Sports: A Collaboration Driven by Adventure

At the beginning of 2025, Amundsen Science was seeking technical clothing adapted to ensure the safety and comfort of its staff throughout the marine season. Working aboard a research vessel in the Arctic Ocean often means operating in extreme environments: temperatures dropping to –13 °C as early as September, strong winds, precipitation, and constant exposure to icy seawater. Although access to these regions occurs during the summer months, weather conditions remain harsh and demand reliable, durable equipment specifically designed for the Arctic environment.

This concrete, recurring, and essential operational need led us to explore meaningful collaborations with partners who share our field reality and core values. It was in this context that Amundsen Science connected with Amundsen Sports.

A meeting shaped by shared values

An internationally recognized Norwegian company, Amundsen Sports designs durable technical apparel built to perform in the world’s most demanding environments. Inspired by the adventurous spirit of the explorer Roald Amundsen, the brand combines traditional craftsmanship with innovation to create products that are high-performing, responsible, and respectful of nature. The vision of Amundsen Sports closely mirrors our own values and operational realities. Responsible exploration, ingenuity, adaptability, and resilience lie at the heart of both our missions.

Like Amundsen Science, Amundsen Sports follows an experience-based approach. Each product is tested in real-world conditions—ranging from the Arctic to the Alps and the Canadian Rockies:
“Adventure is our lab, and we capture it authentically. Every piece is built to perform in real conditions, ensuring it meets the highest standards before reaching you.”
This philosophy of field testing resonates strongly with the daily work of our scientific, technical, and logistical teams, who operate each year in some of the most complex environments on the planet.

Tradition and innovation at the core of the Amundsen identity

The name Amundsen carries a powerful legacy deeply rooted in Arctic exploration. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen remains an iconic figure of human ingenuity in polar environments. This shared inspiration is reflected in the DNA of both Amundsen Sports and Amundsen Science.

In 2003, the Arctic research community gained access to a unique platform with the arrival of the CCGS Amundsen, a former icebreaker converted into a scientific research vessel. Named in honour of Roald Amundsen, the ship quickly became a cornerstone of multidisciplinary research in the Canadian Arctic, fostering collaboration among scientists, professionals, and members of Indigenous communities in Canada and abroad.

Amundsen Science builds upon this legacy by supporting research, knowledge sharing, and the development of long-term collaborations, while continuously promoting innovation and collective expertise.

Testing, trusting, and wearing with pride

Aboard the CCGS Amundsen, every piece of equipment is put to the test. Amundsen Sports garments accompanied our teams on deck, during manoeuvres, scientific operations, and the long hours spent observing the ocean and sea ice. Tested day after day in wind, cold, and humidity, they quickly became essential allies.

This trust in the equipment is matched by a sense of pride: pride in wearing apparel designed by a company that truly understands field challenges and shares a common vision of responsible exploration. The jackets and technical layers travelled thousands of kilometres—from southern regions of the country to the Arctic—following the Amundsen’s path across the ocean.

This sweater has become essential for me. The merino wool is incredibly soft and comfortable, while providing natural warmth without overheating. I love it just as much for work on the Amundsen, hikes in nature as I do for my days in the city.

I really like the merino wool in my Amundsen Sport sweater: it keeps me warm while being very breathable. It’s ideal for layering in the Arctic, or on its own for operations inside the ship.

A collaboration focused on the future

In a context of accelerating climate change, the Arctic is both a place of research and a place of responsibility. For Amundsen Science, surrounding ourselves with partners who share this environmental awareness and operational rigor is essential.

This collaboration with Amundsen Sports perfectly illustrates our commitment to building partnerships rooted in shared values, grounded in field experience, and oriented toward the future. It also highlights the importance of fostering durable connections within the Amundsen community—a community that is engaged, curious, and deeply connected to the environments it studies.

Amundsen Science will continue to chart its course alongside partners inspired by exploration, innovation, and respect for the North, and invites other organizations to join this collective adventure.
