Amundsen Science is the non-profit organization responsible for the management of the scientific mandate of the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, Canada’s only icebreaker equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities to support multidisciplinary studies. The Amundsen is accessible to Canadian academics, indigenous researchers, and their partners from government, the private sector and other countries. The ship’s pool of specialized equipment includes scientific systems and portable laboratories that can accommodate the needs of physical, chemical, and biological oceanographers, marine geologists, geomorphologists, geographers, as well as social and medical scientists.

Job Opportunity

Amundsen Science is seeking an experienced and motivated Northern Research Liaison Officer to support the development and coordination of prime communication and community engagement strategies and activities. This position will bring you to work on varied projects with an enthusiastic team of professionals, technicians, students, researchers, and Northern residents and communities, all with a vested interest in the North.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Executive Director and in close collaboration with other team members, the position will entail the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Lead and implement activities to increase visibility and strengthen Indigenous community engagement Northern rights-holder with Amundsen Science and the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen.
  • Liaise with Northern communities and organizations for the obtention of scientific research licensing and permitting. Facilitate Northern coordination on the screening process and conformity related to these permits.
  • Work in a team to plan and organize meetings (virtual and in person) with Northern communities and Indigenous organizations to foster collaborations, display technical capacities and services, and discuss projects, collaborations & ship-time opportunities aboard the CCGS Amundsen.
  • Work in a team to support the organization of special events aboard the CCGS Amundsen or other venues in collaboration with the North, such as community visits or school visits.
  • Travel to the North and other regions/venues as needed to implement meetings and special events.
  • Participate in the recruitment of Indigenous trainees to be part of the Amundsen Science technical team during the annual expeditions to the Arctic.
  • Liaise with other national organizations (e.g. ArcticNet, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Polar Knowledge Canada) and universities to increase synergy and collaborations in Arctic Research.

Qualifications and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 1 year experience directly related to the tasks, responsibilities and skills specified, or equivalent.
  • Excellent verbal and written English and French.
  • Verbal and written Inuktitut would be considered an asset for this position.
  • Knowledge of Northern environmental ethics for working with Indigenous communities.
  • Exceptionally skilled in interpersonal relations and communications.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the academic research environment, ideally related to marine science or Arctic research.
  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the administrative team, researchers, partner organizations and external consultants.
  • Superior autonomy and attention to detail; and
  • Computer proficiency using MS Office applications.

Workplace

Amundsen Science is based out of Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada. Teleworking possible (to be discussed). A computer station and the necessary equipment will be provided for remote work.
