Result postcard – Microplastics Are Found in the Arctic

Results Postcards turn complex Arctic research findings into clear, engaging snapshots that make our science accessible and easy to share with communities, partners, and the public.

This study examines the presence of microplastics in the subsurface waters of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago using samples collected in 2018 aboard the CCGS Amundsen. The results show low but detectable concentrations of microplastics (0.031 particles per liter), mostly textile microfibres such as polyester and acrylic. Microplastics were found in most sampling locations, with the highest concentrations in Baffin Bay, although no significant link was found with environmental factors. The study suggests that shipping may be a local source of microfibres, particularly through greywater discharge, and highlights the importance of continued monitoring using ships as sampling platforms.
