Amundsen Science is seeking northern applicants interested in completing a paid oceanographic instrumentation internship at the Amundsen Science warehouse in Quebec City and on board the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen in spring-summer 2025.
Job Description
Working with the Amundsen’s technical team, the intern’s tasks will include:
- Working in a team setting to install, repair, maintain and operate various scientific instruments and systems before and during the CCGS Amundsen expedition in the Canadian Arctic, with a particular focus on the Rosette water sampling system.
- Participation to the mobilization of oceanographic equipment for the annual at-sea expedition.
- Participation in the annual at-sea expedition (4-6 weeks): supporting the operations of scientific equipment, supporting the technical team for maintenance and repairs.
- Participation to the writing of operational reports detailing data sampling procedures, quipment problems encountered and troubleshooting techniques applied.
- Support scientific researchers and students from the CCGS Amundsen’s community in achieving their scientific objectives during the at-sea missions.
- Support other members of the Amundsen’s technical team at sea and on land as needed.
The intern will be required to submit a short report at the end of the internship summarizing their work experience.
Qualifications
- Experience in maintaining and operating scientific equipment, an asset.
- Experience in scientific data measurement, an asset.
- Capacity to spend 4 to 6 weeks at sea in the Canadian Arctic.
- Ability to work autonomously as well as in a dynamic team environment.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Passport.
Workplace
Amundsen Science is based at Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada. The position also involves working at sea on the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen during expedition legs in the Labrador Sea, Baffin Bay or High Arctic. Although you will be working in a French-speaking environment, our personnel are bilingual, and the tasks associated with this position can be performed in English.
Working conditions
Depending on the candidate’s willingness and ability to travel south, the internship positions can include a training period in Quebec City between May 3rd and June 27th, 2025, and a period of at-sea work aboard the vessel for one or two of these periods (to be discussed):
• 27 June to 10 July 2025
• 10 July to 7 August 2025
• 7 August to 4 September 2025
• 4 September to 2 October 2025
• 2 October to 30 October 2025
Salary: to be discussed according to experience. Travel from/to the North all expenses paid.
The internship could lead to a longer contract/job within Amundsen Science.
