Amundsen Science is seeking nominations for Inuit representation on its Board of Directors. Candidates should have a desire to provide input, ideas and guidance on the role and mandate of the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen within the research landscape in Inuit Nunangat, across Canada and around the world.
Position
Candidates with experience in vessel operations and/or Arctic research infrastructure (including with respect to user growth and diversification, stakeholder/rightsholder engagement, national and international collaboration, and technology development) are particularly encouraged. This is a voluntary position with paid travel expenses and liability insurance.
Responsibilities include:
- Attend Board meetings twice a year (1-day in person meeting, 1-day online meeting)
- Participate on a volunteer basis in committee meetings related to ship-time requests, equity, diversity and inclusion, budget and finance, or infrastructure development.
- Participate in additional Board calls by videoconference as needed (1-2 per year)
Qualifications
The nominee must be of high personal and professional integrity and should not have any interests
that would impair his or her ability to exercise independent judgment. The nominee is expected to
have some management experience that demonstrates the ability to function effectively in an
oversight role. No specific expertise is required, but the following qualities are desired:
- Willingness to support the development of CCGS Amundsen‘s mission and research
environment, including how the facility can better support the National Inuit Research
Strategy. - Ability to network Arctic marine research nationally to promote the sustainability of the Amundsen Science model and facilitate community engagement.

Applications will be reviewed by the Amundsen Science Governance and Nominating Committee, which will make a recommendation to the Board of Directors. About Amundsen Science
Amundsen Science is the non-profit organization responsible for managing the scientific program of the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, Canada’s only icebreaker equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities to support multidisciplinary Arctic research. Based at Université Laval and funded primarily by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Amundsen Science maintains the ship’s pool of scientific equipment, coordinates the use of the icebreaker for science in collaboration with the Canadian Coast Guard, and provides technical and logistical support to user programs at sea. The Board of Directors of Amundsen Science is responsible for the overall management of the scientific mandate of the CCGS Amundsen. Board members deliberate and make decisions in good faith, consistent with the mission and vision of Amundsen Science and in the best interests of its stakeholders and user community. The appointed members have diverse experience and include a range of expertise in management, policy-making, and scientific research.
