Amundsen Science is the non-profit organization responsible for the management of the scientific mandate of the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, Canada’s only icebreaker equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities to support multidisciplinary studies. The Amundsen is accessible to Canadian academics, indigenous researchers, and their partners from government, the private sector and other countries. The ship’s pool of specialized equipment includes scientific systems and portable laboratories that can accommodate the needs of physical, chemical, and biological oceanographers, marine geologists, geomorphologists, geographers, as well as social and medical scientists.

Job Opportunity

Amundsen Science is currently seeking a warehouse and maintenance manager to meet its logistical and technical support needs for the oceanographic missions of the icebreaker CCGS Amundsen. This position will lead you to work in an experienced and diverse team of coordinators and technicians in support of the Canadian and international oceanographic science community.

Job Description

Under the supervision of the Executive Director and in close collaboration with members of the Amundsen Science technical and administrative team, the highly versatile position will involve the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage the logistics of the transportation of purchases to and from Laval University, the main warehouse, and suppliers, by communicating with truck drivers, suppliers and partners to ensure the delivery of purchases to the various Amundsen Science workspaces.
  • Manage Amundsen Science’s workspaces on land (warehouses and workshops) as well as the various handling tools (forklift, truck (pick-up), etc.) associated with it.
  • Regularly inspect workspace equipment and machinery, organize tools, and oversee general maintenance and cleaning of spaces.
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment and purchases for the various technical teams.
  • Coordinate the installation, electrical connection, repairs, maintenance and storage/storage of the CCGS Amundsen’s various laboratory and cargo containers.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and fit-up of the CCGS Amundsen‘s permanent laboratories.
  • Establish and enforce safety standards and procedures (take care of all annual inspections of safety equipment, including survival suits, safety lines and harnesses, slings, etc.).
  • Support the Amundsen Science technical team during mobilization and demobilization periods by making routine purchases as well as receiving/delivering and transporting equipment and consumables as needed.
  • Work with the Accounting and Contract Management Technician to compile and archive documents related to purchasing, including delivery notes.
  • Provide technical and logistical support to other members of the Amundsen Science team as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

  • High school or college diploma or equivalent.
  • Skills in mechanics, welding, sandblasting, carpentry, hydraulics, an asset.
  • Electrical skills and ability to use diagnostic tools are an asset.
  • Good physical condition.
  • Positive and proactive attitude and ability to work in a team.
  • Be organized, know how to prioritize tasks, attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate integrity at work.
  • Interest in oceanographic instrumentation and associated measuring devices, an asset
  • Possess a Class 5 driver’s license or higher.
  • Bilinguism, an asset.

Workplace

Amundsen Science is based at Laval University in Quebec City, Canada. Occasional teleworking possible (to be discussed). A computer station and the necessary equipment will be provided for the work. Boarding the CCGS Amundsen possible (to be discussed).

Working Conditions

  • Salary to be discussed and determined according to experience.

  • Relocation package available if required.
  • Start date: Winter 2025
  • Full-time (35 hours, flexible schedule). Annual contract, renewable. Possibility also of part-time work and variable hours over the year (to be discussed).
