Cette algue microscopique, que l\u2019on trouve g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement dans la glace de mer de premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e, coule au fond de la mer une fois que la glace a fondu. Une \u00e9quipe de scientifiques a analys\u00e9 des \u00e9chantillons de s\u00e9diments marins de surface et a constat\u00e9 que la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019ADN de Polarella glacialis est li\u00e9e \u00e0 la concentration de glace de mer observ\u00e9e. Ils ont \u00e9galement pu trouver le m\u00eame ADN dans des s\u00e9diments datant de 12 000 ans dans le nord de la baie de Baffin, ce qui leur permet de savoir quelles \u00e9taient les concentrations de glace de mer \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque ! Leur nouvelle m\u00e9thode pourrait permettre de mieux comprendre les conditions de glace de mer auxquelles les deux p\u00f4les ont \u00e9t\u00e9 confront\u00e9s au cours des derniers mill\u00e9naires.
